The Royal South of France

“Tell me please, how you can leave Nice and return to Paris?" said Mathieu, a Nice citizen.

His voice was full of astonishment.

His tanned smiling face and the light blue jacket he wore explained his reaction. It is comfortable to live in Nice where the sky is mostly shiny bright, and the rays of light are vividly warm in mid-winter.

I arrived in the south of France to watch the Carnival and the flowers parade which takes place every year in February. There is no need for an excuse to visit Nice in any season. The capital of the French Riviera is blessed with meticulous exotic, colorful beauty and plenty of historical cultural sites, as I happen to discover gradually during my visit.

Only a few hours train journey from Paris. Approaching Antibes, when you start to notice from your window the sea glittering in silver, dark blue, and the Palms opening as fans seductively, you breathe with relief in your seat.

A month before I was there to visit Antibes, Saint Paul de Vence.

I was thrilled to be in this charming region again. The cold wind of Paris was left far behind and stopped chasing me. Although I couldn't take off my coat and scarf, I felt the warm and delightful air instead of the chill.

The memory of visiting the village Saint Paul de Vence where floats the soul of the painter Chagall was still so alive in my mind.

In Nice, there is an impressive Chagall museum on top of a hill gathering a collection of his works from different periods of his life.

As I was climbing the hill to the museum I clutched strands of nostalgia. My father Yosef Mundi, the controversial, rebellious playwright, interviewed Chagall many years ago for a local Israeli newspaper. More than once in my childhood I heard him say "we were talking for hours, hours," his eyes sparkling with emotion. After reading about the strong connection between Chagall and drama, that he painted the set of various theatres, as well as the ceiling of Opera Garnier in Paris, I understood the chemistry between the painter and the theatre man.

Red, orange, blue, yellow, colors brought out from the pictures of Chagall were like an invitation to dance with the joy of life.  Filling you with optimism and strength. When I stepped out from the venue, surrounding garden was glowing in festive green.

Caterina who works in the tourism office accompanied me all along  the stroll. She shows me the museum of photography Charles Nègre.  There is a current exhibition of Christine Spengler  the "War Photographer" .With a dress and hair cut straight from the 20s looking as an Almodovar actress,(born in France, raised in Madrid). She was sitting in the room chatting with people. Her children's photos in black and white in Northern Ireland, Iraq, Lebanon, throughout the years were incredibly poignant.

I had the feeling of "déjà vu," as I walked later in the narrow streets of Nice old town" le Vieux Nice", built like a labyrinth. Sheltered from the hot sun, the variety of restaurants, cafes, and local products were revealed to me. I immediately acknowledged the passion of the great painters - Picasso, Matisse, and Chagall - for this city rich in spices and flavors.  I could literally imagine seeing them on Saturday morning in the flower market at Cours Saleya in one of the traditional cafes, near the square ,sitting, smoking, drinking and staring lasciviously at the women passing by.

You are merely taken away by the wildness of this region. The generous nature it is itself is a work of art to admire. The vegetables and fruits presented at the stalls looked as if they were picked straight from the garden.

Lost Paradise

I discovered, after taking the lift to the top of the hill. The park of the castle with a spectacular view over Nice, and was impressed by the diverse vegetation, with the cactus especially capturing my attention. Although they were many groups of tourists, there was a mysterious silence enveloping me as if I was alone with nature.

The pale blue shimmering sea was winking at me from afar.

After the walk, I enjoyed a meal with fresh niçois products and the Socca (a bread made from the flour of chick- pea) I found that the artichoke might be the uncrowned king of vegetables in Nice. It was in many dishes as a trimming,or on its own. I was quite fond of the Artichoke and Parmesan salad.

Caterina laughed "I could argue over that, for me the king of niçois  vegetables is the Suisse chard ."

14.30 The afternoon sun was particularly strong. Adults and children were gathering around the place Massena. Here arrived vans splendidly decorated with flowers, to the sounds of pop music, dancers alongside. The square was washed with a fountain of colors.

Caterina tells me that the TNN, Nice’s National Theater, is managed by Irina Brook. I have seen the play "Peer Gynt" she directed at Bouffes de Nord, loved it.   The search for truth, the originality, taking thoughtful risks, creating the unpredictable, the magic.  Values she shares with her father, the director Peter Brook who inspired my father’s writing, his vision, and mine.

It all made sense for me. It was as if it was all falling into place. The past was emerging in the present, and with the vibrant, splashy landscape of Nice, it created harmony in my thoughts.

Just before sunset, I was visiting Palais Lascaris, in the heart of the city. A baroque decorated Palais of the Family Lascaris from the 17th century. A range of musical instruments is on display, as many concerts were taking place to entertain the Italian, French aristocracy back in time, in the golden, shimmery red, royal rooms.

French Humor

Who says the French don't have a sense of humor about themselves?

21.30 The audience was waiting in square Massena with an increasing expectation. The Carnival will start any minute.

This year is a tribute to 100 years of Studios Cinema Victorines in Nice.

It is as if they were stepping out from a surreal hallucination, which you don't wish to wake from. Enormous blown up characters, Charlie Chaplin, Hitchcock, Putin holding Gerard Depardieu who got Russian citizenship, Trump as a red-haired monster carrying President Macron with a threatening gesture. Macron and his wife Brigitte where the stars of the parade.  A huge puppet of Marilyn Monroe with her eternal white dress was revealed as having the features of Brigitte Macron. Even the yellow jacket protesters were "costars figures" at the show.

Menton

The glory of the lemon.

I was leaving beautiful and glamorous Nice the next day to find another city, no less ancient and elegant. Forty minutes drive, right by the Italian border. Menton.

Every  year in February Menton celebrates "La fête du Citron." Menton has a reputation through the centuries for her lemons .It has the ideal climate for their cultivation. The bourgeoisie from all over Europe travelled to Menton especially to seek for the yellow fruit, renowned for its healing powers.

A parade with figures covered with thousands of lemons and oranges  takes place in mid-February  a parallel to the Nice Carnival.  A great tourist attraction.  In the beautiful Biovès gardens ,is an exhibition of characters taken straight  from a book of Indian legends, filled with citrus fruit.

Strolling in the city, I bumped into them everywhere. All along the way were trees of oranges and lemons. They decorated the shop windows, dominated the town so that even the sun seemed like a smiley lemon in the sky.

Menton is an exciting combination of French and Italian influences.  Wherever I walked in the city I heard equally spoken those two languages.  Sitting in one of the cozy squares, by the palm trees, hearing the whispering sounds of the sea, I enjoyed the view of the mountains in the horizon. The border seemed blurry. Was I in France or Italy?

At night when I returned to Paris, the lemon sun of Menton was still dazzling me.
