Arshad Latif (Pakistan/UK) is a famous name in Pakistani diaspora poetry. He writes in Urdu – the national language of Pakistan – both nazm (poems) and ghazal with equal fluency and expertise. First collection of his poetry: Chasma e Khwab Se (From the Dream’s Fountain) was published about two decades ago. Currently, he is working on his second book. ODE TO A BENEVOLENT NIGHT
There was sunlight,
fierce sunlight
Dust was rising
and the sky was pale
as if it were a reflection
of pain
I, only in the quest
of some shadow,
kept on wandering
from here to
there
to search for you
You were nowhere to
find
and I took refuge
in the night.

I am big
My cage is small
You are small
your cage is big

دُھوپ
تیز دُھوپ تھی
دُھول اُڑ رہی
تھی
اور آسمان زرد
تھا
عکسِ روئے زرد
تھا
مَیں بس ایک
سائے کی تلاش میں
اِدھر اُدھر
یہاں وہاں
تجھ کو ڈھونڈھتا
رہا
تُو کہیں نہیں
ملا
اور مَیں
رات کی پناہ میں
چلا گیا
قیدی
مَیں بڑا ہوں
میرا پنجرہ چھوٹا
ہے
تم چھوٹے ہو
تمھارا پنجرا بڑا
ہے
کیا تُم خود کو
آزاد سمجھتے ہو؟
