English

Pinocchio, Oh Pinocchio

When you think about Pinocchio, you immediately think of a wooden puppet whose nose grows with each lie he told.

In spite of the fact that Pinocchio is a famous and popular story, it is not frequently seen in theater productions.

There for I was delighted to discover after my last visit to London at the end of December that Pinocchio is now being shown in the National Theater which is located by the Themes River.

"All tickets have been sold out" was posted at the box office, it didn't discourage me. I decided to patiently wait because London's theater is a big love of mine. I was not going to give up so quickly. There is always a surprise which can appear out of nowhere, and a ticket could miraculously show up.

I returned to the desk after 40 minutes and the attendant was there with a smile" Good news, someone has cancelled and you can have his ticket.

When I go into the venue I am thrilled to discover that my seat was on a front row. Not on the balcony above.

When the red curtain lifted, the magic began.

At this moment the theater offered a true experience of feeling and learning to the audience with that something that doesn’t have a logic explanation .Sort of a metaphysical experience.  It has reminded me that very rarely does the English theater disappoint me.

The play Pinocchio has reached ally my expectations and beyond. The spectators were taken on a colorful, imaginative journey. Through the play I learned a lot about Pinocchio and the legend. The actor who played Pinocchio looked as if he were a living puppet .The carpenter, master Geppeto who made the wooden puppets and created Pinocchio was not a real actor but a giant puppet. It took three actors to control it. One of whom spoke Geppeto lines.

The relationship between the actors and the giant puppets was captivating, and has a surrealistic feel.   As the smooth puppets theater's director who convinces Pinocchio to join the company. The fairy in the forest or even the leader who takes the children to the corrupted island where everyone transforms into a donkey if they don’t obey him.  He is also a massive puppet with a ginger hair and a Scottish accent.

Pinocchio in the British theater is an English child who is rebellious and hates structures and orders and just wants freedom. As consequences he discovers the awful price he has to pay. The world of  the illusive pleasures which was promised to him by many,  as the director of the puppets theater, the girl who convinced him to join the magic island (because you can do what you want there) are revealed as deceptive, lacking humanity and compassion. Pinocchio understands through his conscience played by the cricket that persistently follows him everywhere he goes, that he can't deny his perception. By doing that, it will only cause him more and more suffering.

The conversation between Pinocchio and his conscience (the cricket) is fascinating. What is conscience and why can't it be ignored?

The spectators understood that we always have to choose between desire and morality. Sometimes what seems seductive is no more than an illusion. What is interesting is that life mirrors the fairy tale, we can't avoid the temptation and avoid the repercussions of our actions.

It is only through his torment that Pinocchio finds redemption in the belly of the whale. Geppetto was swallowed by a whale looking for Pinocchio in the sea. When Pinocchio is inside the belly, he meets his father who has built him.

The technical effects of the show were brilliant, as the giant puppets skillfully built. The set design of the theater with surprises as the enormous 3D fish. But above all without a doubt, it was a truly English touch which convinced me of the values which reigned through out the play.

The Italian legend of Pinocchio was written by Carlo Collodi  takes place in Florence in the north of Italy. It is reborn in this English version .This dynamic and a fresh adaptation is no less convincing.

Pinocchio as a British boy who could have been in a tough and strict boarding school, seeking a way out.

Geppeto looked like a hardened working class man who built wooden puppets professionally. He has not had much luck in his lonely life, for this reason he created Pinocchio which transforms his world.

The mischievous behavior of Pinocchio (the bad boy) reminds one of the lost punk boys. The anti hero, who wanted to rebel against conformists and kick the normative code of behavior aside,.

The Punk dies longtime ago.  The guys wearing chains and dressing black have long ago vanished from the scene.

The streets of London are being packed with people who dress accurately and neat. Wandering around   center of London and I discover chains of bars and restaurants which are holding the same names.  The small independent bars have long been closed probably because their owners couldn’t pay the high rent and were replaced by restaurants that lack originality. Spaces designed with an industrial aesthetic look impeccably sterile and lacking coziness  . I found that so many of the dark alleys had turned into commercial zones.

It's hard not to get carried away with the crazy consumerism London, the strong and influential city has become.

There are the good old traditional pubs who still exit. They are loyal to their roots. But even in spite of the good music it seems the rich culture of old London is fading away.  The dramatic, flamboyant characters that used to be seen are no longer there. The present customers are hooked on to their mobiles phone screen while eating a Gourmet hamburger and chips.

And back to Pinocchio, in the original story as in the theatrical version he doesn’t stop learning about life and the evil desires which leads him to places that only seem to be beautiful and sweet but are revealed as the gates to hell.

The nose which gets longer when Pinocchio lies appears from time to time during the play with an impressive technical effect. The nose of the actor became longer and longer.  At the end it has revealed that lies can be sometimes unexpectedly useful.

When he is in the belly of the fish, his nose gets so long; it tickled the fish's throat   so he ejects him along with Geppeto and the boat.

Maybe it’s the wink from the British director that lies can be sometimes helpful. As after all it saved Pinocchio's life and his father.

In the original book there were many animals as a snake, fox cat donkey and the cricket.

In this adaptation there are just the cricket (female) and the donkey (the girl who persuades Pinocchio to join the land of amusements which slowly transforms her into a donkey.

What is common to both book and play, Pinocchio doesn’t want to become rich, he just wants to be human even if it means that he will become mortal.

In the end of the show Pinocchio becomes a real child and Gepetto, the giant puppet vanishes from the scene and reappears as a real human who looks exactly as  like the puppet who was probably created in image.

The good conscience won. Pinocchio and his father will remain in poverty but finally achieve harmony and become happy. Together they can be strong and win over the bad.

Pinocchio is the theater of cruelty. In the real version even more, so for example the drummer who wants to use his skin to make a drum.

Or the fisherman who wants to fry him.  He goes through so many tortures until the good fairy puts end to it. She decides that he deserves to become a real child thanks to his courage and his acknowledgement that he loves his father.

At the end of the play the audience applauded enthusiastically. Who bowed time after time and many tears were shed.

On the way out if the theater the children look excited holding their parents hand while going to the underground.

I go up on the bridge which leads me to the train station at charring cross. Under it the water looked as if it was colored as the evening sky.

The lights of the theaters glittering and guiding me safely on my way.    Even in a wet, cold wintery night, London is vibrant. There are many people walking in the streets. I am still under the magical spell of the play. The giant puppets are walking in front of me as in a dream... The dance and songs are flickering in my mind. I can hear the sweet voice of the actor who plays Pinocchio

The legend that was written toward the end of the 19 century, by Carlo Collodi is reborn in the years of 2000 in England and it is relevant as ever.

Without a doubt London needs its own tempered wooden puppet full of energy and charisma, wild and stubborn, quite temperamental.  Ready to take risks, but with good conscious.   Maybe it will bring back  the good old rebellious spirit to town and will shake up the indifferent, indulgent crowd.
