Paris in Autumn

My favorite season in Paris is in autumn. It suits it so well. Especially during the months September, October. The city awakes gradually from its long summer sweet sleep. The Parisians even if they liked taking their holidays and getting away from Paris if they can, enjoy coming back to the city which welcomes them again in a warm, gentle hug.

It is possible to feel the autumn, even by strolling down the street. The ray of lights which accompany you, give you that feeling that they are no longer there to stay. The days can be sunny and splendid, the terraces of the cafes crowded with people who enjoy drinking coffee and be able to stay outside. And yet you can't avoid the sinking thought that the winter squats in the entrance gate, waiting for the first occasion to burst into this ideal calmness.

There is also this little indecision if to wrap your neck with a warm scarf or just a veil, whether to wear a cardigan on the tee shirt or a warm coat cause it's impossible to predict what will happen in few hours. When you hang longer outside, the sun might disappear all of a sudden without any warning, and a chilly wind can blow out of nowhere.

It is the period where the leaves of the trees flaunt in colorful leaves. From shimmery red, a desert yellowish to a vivid orange. I am always full of astonishment to the sight of the bright leaves which decorate the trees festively and declare the opening of the autumn season officially. It is a delightful period for a leisurely walk in one of the parks of Paris, in a late afternoon. Sitting on a chair and letting the smooth rays of the sun caress your face gently.

The autumn is in the air because when you get out from the metro, you can smell the roasted chestnuts which have disappeared in the summer. They are back again, the sellers of their chestnuts and their little carriages, standing in the corner of the street or at the metro entrance.

The Parisian autumn is unpredictable. Each year it changes. This year it prolongs an unusually hot summer. The days are long and warm, but the forecast announces some changes in the following days. The temperatures should fall, and the rain will be back.

Meanwhile one of the symbols of France has passed away. The enduring and most famous French singer Charles Aznavour, at the age of 94, whose name connected with the French culture.  I loved the song "La Boehme" which reminds me of the artistic Paris. His songs suit so well the autumn's atmosphere. The sweetness of the summer's end combined with a certain romantic nostalgia and a pinch in the heart. His songs were the soundtrack of the older generation. His death reminds a period of another Paris. Much more romantic, before the emergence of the internet and mobile phones.

And still, Paris is a city of traditions and has excellent museums which remind you, what Paris is all about.

Just a few days left before its closure. The exhibition in the Petit Palais "the impressionism in London."I didn't want to miss it.

A night before, I dreamt that I was sitting in a small Cafe in the "Gare du Nord." I wanted to travel to London spontaneously, but the ticket was too expensive, so instead of leaving with the next train, I sat over a cup of coffee planning the rest of the day. All of a sudden the sun disappeared, and the sky filled with heavy clouds, it started to rain massively. "The autumn is gone, welcome winter," thought crossed my mind. I noticed an elegant man with mustache, brown hair sitting not far, staring at the window while drawing something He seemed to be a painter. Maybe it's the expression of my face. Suddenly  he looked at me and smiled. I was surprised that there was no mobile phone on his table. Dressed up in an old fashion style. He arranged the block of papers in the suitcase, paid for the coffee, and before leaving ,approached me . Something about his look was striking. His eyes were bright in a crystal blue. He said "Don't let the rain change your mood, it's not an excuse! You need to create under any circumstances. There is beauty in the darkness too"

And before I could say something he was gone and then I woke up.

At early afternoon I was going to "Petit Palais" I was particularly enthusiast to see that exhibition. The pictures of the impressionism are spectacular to watch. It takes the observer on a delightful journey. I was curious to learn the interpretation of London, by the French painters.

The exhibition was rich and full of pictures of famous painters as Monet, Pissarro, Daubigny and an excellent painter that I discovered there, James Tissot who has lived and created years in London, being there, it was as if I continued my dream.

It is towards the end of 119 century,1870. The French painters leave Paris. It is a state of war (the Franco Prussian war) Paris is under attack. It is in an appalling situation, people live poorly. The painters are seeking an economical and political refuge across the channel, in England. They live there, taking part in the social and cultural bohemian life in London. Some of them stay a few months, some years. Most of the paintings are being exposed for the first time in France because they belong to private collectors mainly from London. The British natural landscape inspired this exhibition. Darkness and gloomy atmosphere fused with most flamboyant, colorful characters in social meetings. What are being pointed out in many paintings are the cloudy sky, the Thames, this wavy, grayish river, and the big boats which represent mostly the English landscape.

We could imagine physically being in London, maybe visiting the National Gallery which ,one of the paintings reflected it.

Which city you prefer, London or Paris? I have heard this question quite often, and I also have asked others myself. The answer is not conclusive.

The favorable aspects of one city are the weak of the other and vice versa.  The way I see it, they complete each other.

You can be very fond of the coolness and the eccentric English style. As you can appreciate the refined, delicate taste of the French, and as much as it is charming to walk in the Tuileries Gardens and absorb the autumn atmosphere, so it is

enjoyable strolling down Regent park, appreciating the picturesque trees and being in a  less crowded park, which seems reflective, and quiet.

The excitement of the French impressionist painters from the misty, mysterious London didn't leave me indifferent. When I got out from Petit Palais, in spite of the glittering ray of lights in a sunny afternoon, 4 o'clock, I searched behind the colorful leaves in the garden, the Thames River, and the fog.
