 Pony Lady

"Mummy! I just want to get Ice cream from Pony Lady"

As soon as, they entered into the cafe inside the petrol station, the little girl jumped from her mother's lap and ran towards the counter behind which Zahra was busy preparing sandwiches for the customers.

The toddler’s mother rang the bell on the counter, Zahra had a surprising look on her face  as she wasn’t expecting any customer there  "hello ...excuse me – what miraculous hands  you have .........  our little kid wants ice cream only from you..... Za..h..r..a ? - She reluctantly read Zahra’s name-tag, a little difficulty in her tone showing this name wasn’t familiar to her. “Sure... Why not”... Zahra smiled in response, quickly took off the plastic gloves and headed towards the shelves of the ice cream parlour, while cleaning her hands with cotton napkin.

During this whole time one thing continuously irritating her, supervisor Melanie’s staring eyes felt like the tip of a needle inside.  She couldn’t understand it was just a regular routine work, why those curious eyes piercing her all the time – but Melanie considered it was a way of management, so …. She shouldn’t take it personally, but Zahra’s expressions were telling another story. She murmured to herself “do!  whatever you want … even hold the employee's breath...in the name of quality control” Zahra remembering the business administration handbook theories, studied long ago,.... now taking like blood sucking Dracula’s tactics  ......well ... who cares ...she tapped herself ...at least for a little while got a relief from those inspecting eyes, and started preparing cone for the toddler, who was waiting anxiously.... They both looked at each other and smiled in contentment.

----------------------------

Nearly a year been passed in this new country, unfortunately, Zahra couldn’t find a job despite having high qualification in business management. So far, more than a hundred rejection letters in her master file, mocking her deteriorating self-confidence. The savings they brought, after selling all the property of their homeland, were about to run out as well, as three kids rapidly growing needs, felt like she was raising a white elephant. She never thought before that day to day living would be that hard, although, Amir, her husband, found full time job in a small security company, but all of his earnings, consumed in paying weekly rent and other grocery stuff.

In those days of hardship, her new friend Philip the local library assistant advised her "hey Zahra why don't you apply at the petrol station near my house? The manager knows me well. I am sure he wouldn’t mind giving you a chance”. His tone was telling clearly that he was sincere in his thoughts, but, Zahra felt a deep sadness wrapped around her with no glimpse of hope left. She thought in despair “am I that useless- couldn’t find a job of my calibre. She was questioning her outstanding capabilities; definitely her big ego was tearing apart.

She came home with heavy heart after spending another unsuccessful day on the library’s job search database. Zahra couldn’t find interest in any of the house chores, while untangling the dilemma of what to do, she called her only friend Nazli, one of the new settlers who gained an immigrant visa under point system on her own, whereas all other women got this visa because of their husbands efforts .This was really a big achievement in those days especially being a woman with the ethnic background they had.

During the chitchat,   Samad, the most capable member among the whole immigrant group, was mentioned. “Hey ... don’t you know, the poor guy, working in a slaughter house. Last week he came to visit us, saying “not even touched a chicken in my whole life now slaughtering such giant animals. While eating halal meat Muslims wouldn’t  know that fact that their butcher would have a  master's degree in chemistry " he was laughing sarcastically but then burst into tears ------ that made me extremely sad  ----- you  still got a better job, if keeping his example in  mind”.

Zahra replied in affirmation,” yes you are right! Filling petrol in giant vehicles would definitely be   better than slaughtering giant animals ---“. They both were laughing but underneath a layer of sadness could easily be noticed.

She further continued, “do you remember --- Naveed - the guy who was with us in English test?"

"Yes, what happened to him?" Zahra asked anxiously.

"He was claiming himself to be the owner of a cleaning franchise – coincidently, he came to clean my husband Faraz's office, he found out – that –he is only an employee working on basic salary." Nazli laughed sarcastically and said “old habits don’t change easily even the jump from third to first world isn’t enough”.

” Zahra sank into her thoughts “it’s all status co - the blue collar job that lessens the respect of so called white collared middle class people like us” she sighed sadly.

When Nazli did not get an answer, asked in distress "why so sad? I am trying to lighten up your mood by telling the stories of others, facing worse than us, but your silence tells I am failed."

"Hey, don’t feel like this?, you are the only breath of fresh air, otherwise things happening around,   making me feel suffocated."

Zahra continued the conversation “in the name of Dignity of Labour, highly qualified people are forced to do low level jobs." She didn’t notice that in her feeling of disappointment the window she closed was about to break because of the gush of strong wind.

"Yes – that’s the truth ” Nazli took a deep breath - "unfortunately,  our planet been divided into three worlds and ironically  - we are the educated  labourers  of the third world – any way  no matter what – reality of the situation  hitting hard, making us  to  come out of the illusion of superior being. “She  continued “Worst thing is  that we  can't even tell  our miseries to  anyone - when I talked to my elder brother on the phone and  told little bit of what  I have been through , you won’t believe  what happened  - brother stayed quiet in response  - but – the sister-in-law's voice coming from the background , saying  sarcastically  "hum....  living in a country called heaven on earth  but still crying."  This harsh remark of her made me extremely gloomy so just hung up, quietly. "

“Yeah – man  - no one can ever  understand  the depth of our  issues  -  like only  the sufferer  knows  the pain  - and - we  stuck in a situation on the surface looks beautiful but could become a  quicksand , hopefully, will figure out soon how to adjust in it. "

"Mum! I can't find my socks!" Eleven-year-old Zebi noisily called Zahra while shuffling the sock drawer. The conversation would go on and on.... but, Zebi’s timely interference put the full stop to this never ending chit chat.

--------------------------

Finally, on Philip’s referral note, Zahra got frontline cashier job at the petrol station. However, this experience busted the bubble of morality of the civilised world. Although, initially, she assumed that the customers were quite satisfied with her performance, and it was her colleague middle aged Fiona and supervisor Melanie who were minutely picking her little mistakes. She was considering that their aggressively influential behaviour making her more nervous. Seemed like she was losing all of her confidence, slowly she started noticing that sometimes, whenever any customer ran away without paying, Fiona wrongly putting under her name, but she couldn’t find courage to stop her. Some other time, due to her slow processing, longer queues of customers often made Melanie upset.

"I can't afford my branch’s reputation to be declined this much. Every day, dealing with so many complaints against you, I've made a decision. Zahra! From now on, you’ll be working in the kitchen area." Melanie who used to hover around her all the time, said slowly but her chewing words packed Zahra’s remaining confidence to the lowest.

She looked down at herself and thought “am I that incompetent?, not even qualified for the job I thought was trivial. She was drawn into self-pity, questioned herself “for this day I quit my homeland’s first class branch manager job and moved to this country? “She quickly wiped off her teary eyes from the back of the sleeves, didn’t want to show any of her weakness to anyone, for a moment, she wanted  to throw resignation letter on manager’s face but a big question mark appeared in front of her... who is going to pay the bills, and .......

“Hello! What are you thinking?" She quickly came out of her abrupt thoughts, a well built customer waving hundred dollar note in front of her.

"I need some cash," he said rudely.

"Sorry sir. You didn't buy anything, so I can't open the cash drawer."

“O’ you Dam  ...F...  Lady, hurry up”. He spoke loudly in an abusive tone.

“No, sir it’s not possible “, Zahra resisted in soft voice. It was very difficult for her to work out of principle.

All of a sudden, the customer picked up one of the chocolate bar from the shelf near the cash counter and threw on Zahra’s face, this unexpected move made her shocked she couldn’t respond, in that appalling moment, his young colleague, Jack quickly jumped in, who was busy making coffee for other customer, standing behind the giant coffee machine.

“Hey... Come on man! take it easy”.... Jack said in friendly but very firm tone.  His timely action stopped the customer from his aggressive move. Surprisingly, Jack handled the situation really well ...  but... Zahra felt a mixture of deep remorse and frustration rising rapidly inside her. Until now, she had considered Jack, a reckless and carefree young man who would have cared about himself only, but in such difficult time... If he hadn’t intervened, the grumpy customer could have harmed her. Felt like her egocentric claims of recognising people were crushing, one by one, and turning into stereotyped perception only.

She was thinking apathetically “I will definitely quit  ....but ....again, that big question mark   emerged in her mind, the desire to buy latest model of   PlayStation for the kids became the stumbling block – she had to continue this job until got a certificate of reasonable, local customer service experience.  “Ah—no one knows how painful it is,  we the immigrants  of far-off lands  swallow bit by bit our miseries on the torment of our dreams ” she moaned a little,  then, quickly overcame her pessimistic thoughts and continued wrapping up freshly made chicken sandwiches into brown paper bags.

That was the time, when that little girl came into the picture and called her "Pony Lady." – In response, Zahra unintentionally touched her long hair covered in a plastic cap, a surge of pleasant feeling surmounted her ,at least somebody noticed her beautiful long hair....she smiled imperceptibly.

The girl's innocent voice felt like a soothing ointment on her burning wounds.

Zahra swiftly arranged the ice cream in a doubled cone and sprinkled thin layer of colourful chocolate coat around.

The girl said joyfully, "Look – mummy!  I told you, Pony lady is the best … I love the ice cream she makes”.

"Absolutely, Kiddo!..." her mother replied excitedly, she tried to  give some extra money as a tip, but Zahra refused plainly.

“No, madam!, this is so kind of you, but  we can't take this,  thank you anyway for your generosity”.

Zahra mulled over in her thoughts “at this dismal moment, you, mother and daughter, became the savoir –made me forgot Melanie’s harsh words for a while, what else could be the bigger tip than this.”

--------------------

Her shift was about to over, Zahra was in the final stages of cleaning when Melanie appeared at the kitchen door.

"Hmmm, before you leave don’t forget to clean the toilet."

Zahra didn’t like this last minute addition, she made a face and replied “remember – you exempted it since I am working the kitchen”.

"Yeah - but you're done - and don't you clean your home toilet after kitchen work - it's kind of home too."

Zahra felt humiliated, mumbled to herself —– “all of my dreams have crumbled like a termite-infested wall”… she was thinking an appropriate answer,  when,  heard a loud banging noise,  like something big crashing down in the hall.. “ah.. what?  Initially she surprisingly thought “how come,  the crushing of my dreams have created so loud stir ....... but then left her unfinished thoughts aside and ran along  towards the hall area, it was  Fiona,  laying on the ground unconscious, in  miserable shape.

Melanie leaned over her while muttering “how many times I have said to you.... Don't take your health matters lightly… but you never listened”.

Fiona's condition was rapidly deteriorating – her face turned blue as having difficulty breathing.

The hall was completely empty even the occasional customers had also left — the outside gate was closed,

Zahra asked Melanie to call at emergency – at this moment had no idea that she was giving instructions to her control freak supercilious supervisor, instead, for the first time, she observed, in place of a cliff-bearing boss, a weak and frightened woman, stood in front of her.

Fiona was shaking badly now …… Zahra quickly laid on her side and spoke loudly… .. Can’t wait for the ambulance….. She needs immediate CPR. Does anyone knows this… .She looked around …… Melanie was nowhere to be seen. I have first aid certificate.... I can do it...Zahra said to herself, but for a moment she felt negatively … and remembering Fiona’s selfish behaviour toward her ..., why should I act selflessly?

Then …Fiona’s motionless and helpless face…… came closer …… she smelled a strong misty breath on her face, which was gradually fading … in her half open eyes, Zahra could see her wavy reflection.  Sound of the ambulance siren could be heard from afar. Next moment, she shook all the negative thoughts aside and leaned over Fiona, then put her lips on Fiona’s and engaged in CPR.
