At the laundry room

Two men waiting in a laundry room. They are surrounded by eight laundry machines and six dryers, all white. The laundry machines were spinning different cycles.

“Just two dryers in use… I was here once waiting and, with six dryers spinning, you could hardly breath in here!”

“Dryers damage the clothing and I’m too cheap anyways. ‘Prefer the old fashion cloth line.”

“ I used to live in another building… still Minto’s but down over Britannia park. One day, I threw my cloths in the dryer, went up, came back in an hour: everything was gone, including the underwear! Stolen.”

“Smart thief! Got them clean and dried!”

They laughed.

“They were pretty worn out though, like all my other things. What to do with fancy pants on the scaffold!? I only have two or three nice shirts… my ex-girlfriend’s gifts.”

“’You in construction?”

“For now.”

“Funny thing…”

“What?”

“I also have two or three nice shirts in here. ‘Used to be my older brother’s but he lost weight. He gave me all his clothing. Mint condition and they fit me just great!”

“So perhaps that means you should loose some weight?”

The older one starts laughing:

“Good one! But I am actually taller than my brother. He’s better off, though. The only one married, and to a rich girl from a good family. He’s also the most educated from my whole family. More school than we all ever had: my two sisters and my other brother. So that’s what I’m saying… funny thing my good shirts are also presents. We have something in common!”

“You can say that again! We surely have something in common. Three fancy shirts. Thank God not the same ones!”

They shared another good laugh.

“So, you see? continued the older guy. If I dry them on the balcony I avoid getting robbed like you said could happen. Even though, again, my cloths are too worn and ugly to draw any attention.”

“Well… still, you have the ones gotten from your rich brother. Those are nice...”

The older guy threw a glance at his interlocutor and, noticing the big smile, finally got the joke:

“Good one! You imply I’m a loser and make me laugh!”

“Not at all, not at all. Really… I meant no harm… Just to make time pass, you know? Plus, the more I talk, I discover we have more things in common.

But how come you’re not married?”

“How do you know !?”

“You just said it: your older brother is the only one of you married…”

“Ah, right! I was starting to freak out thinking you work for CSIS, but those smart offs wouldn’t live in this rental... Married… Well, one time I almost was...”

“Really! Almost married…”

“Yep. Got engaged. Got almost all the way. Now, that I look back, the hell if I know what got into me. No clue... She wasn't that pretty and she even had a kid from a previous marriage. Nope… I don't know what the heck got into me. It must’ve been love. And that's why people say: love is blind... Because just two months after I started dating her, I bought her an engagement ring from son-of-a-gun Horton's, right from the downtown store. I had a good job back then. Dental, full benefits… You know… the economy was at full throttle. Shares were going up godspeed baby, godspeed. I sold a good chunk of my Motorola shares and paid the ring in cash. Huge, huge amount of money, think platinum, think diamond ring... Don't ask me how many grands I laid… ‘don't feel comfortable to tell you that. You wouldn’t believe it anyhow. But anyways, she loved it, wearing it day and night, in the pool and even in the gym, where she scratched it big time. That was our first fight. We ended up finding a good repair shop, run by professionals: ultrasonic cleaner, really fine filing, ultrasonic again, 300 bucks later came as new. But then other things started. The ex-husband wasn't taking the kid in week-ends, like he was supposed to. I’m sick, I’m working overtime, I’m taking my mom to the hospital… the whole nine yards of bullshit, and when he was "available" he was taking the kid late Saturday to drop him back Sunday at six for supper. We barely had a week-end now and then for ourselves. It was really depressing how the pig party-animal of a father tried to dump the kid like that. Anyway, one year after I bought her the ring, we broke up.”

“Crap! And you lost the ring?”

“No, I got it back. Because the agreement was, we were going to use the same ring as a wedding ring too. It was gorgeous, I am telling you. So, without wedding, it was just fair to recover back my ring. If it were just a plain, less expensive engagement ring, maybe she’d have gotten away with it.”

“And you got your money back?”

“This is a whole different story. ‘Went back to Horton's, who’s advertising “they pay the best value for jewelry”, and the owner barks straight to my face we don't sell used rings! I’d have to tell customers it's an used engagement ring from a couple who broke up and who would buy something like that?! It's bad karma! So he offered me 10% of what I’d paid a year before.”

“No way! And you agreed?”

“Hell, no! My first impulse was to break his jaw and then the front window with a brick I had in my truck. Instead, I laughed in his face and left with the ring in my pocket. Tried to forget about it, until few months later, when my mom asked about it. A friend of her sister had a jewelry store. They fixed me a meeting with the owner and I rushed to see him: You bought it from Horton's!? That was so stupid. Ask how much he's paying for rent downtown! 10,000 a month! No wonder he ripped you off. He needs to rip off few like you to cover that kind of rent. Next time you want an engagement ring come here. I'll give you a really good deal... Listen what: I'll put your ring for sale. I would have to tell people it’s used… Whatever price I get, I'll keep 200 for me, that’s all. People always fall in love and guys will always look for bargains, trying to get a cheaper ring, lying his bride-to-be it’s a brand new ring… You know what I mean? Maybe that’s why this one didn’t bring you luck: the guy from Horton’s lied. Anyways, be thankful I am good friends with your auntie… I’ll keep 200 off the deal I make and I'll pass the rest to you.

“So? Did he sell it?”

“Of course he did! For half price!”

“Only?!”

“That’s right! Still, it was the best investment I’ve ever had, considering that all my Motorola and Nortel shares had tanked. This was 2001… All my shares, all my investments went down-down-down. By the time I cashed in, they were just garbage.

50% of the ring, which don’t forget, was paid from sold stocks, was my best investment ever! I got the money from the store owner, all new 100-dollar bills. He kept 300, the bastard! You think he forgot he'd promised to keep just two?! No! For the rich, 200 and 300 is the same! Anyway, I grabbed the money and didn’t say anything but thanks. See you next time when you get the real girl! That would be never, I said. I went in my truck, put the money on the other seat and drove straight to Home Depot. I got myself a whole load of timber and with that I fully renovated my house. For years I had been feeling good and grateful for what I did back then. Returning back from work, seeing what an awesome job I did, what a nice living and dining I had, how quiet it was (no screaming kids, no moody wife), how easy I could pop open a can of beer on my cedar deck… believe me, I was truly grateful.

As for the ordeal I went through, I don't have any regrets. Because people ask me all the time: how come you’ve never had a family, even once? A nice, tall, good-looking fellow like you?

So then I tell them: what the hell are you talking about!? I was engaged once! I was damn close to commit myself: half-planned the wedding party on the beach and bought an egg-size-diamond wedding ring! Then people usually laugh, like you just did!

Ok, now you see? Time flies when you have fun: my laundry's done. I’m going up on the balcony to hang it on my cloth line.”

“Wait a second! Where’s the house? How come you rent here now?”

“Well, that's another story. Maybe I'll tell you that one too… next time we meet in the laundry room. Cheers!”

“See you around, sir!”

Asta-i cu totul altă poveste.

L-a vîndut?

Normal că l-a vîndut! La juma’ de preț!

Numai?

Numai! Crezi că a uitat c-a promis că îmi ia numai două?!

Hai noroc!

Ne mai vedem, domnule!
