Scene I

The living room in Sara and Joe’s apartment. There’s a photograph of a soldier hanging on the wall, a little crooked. Joe and Sara are sitting at either end of a sofa. Joe, a man in his sixties, blind, unshaven, wearing house clothes, is looking vacantly into space. Sara, a little younger than Joe, also blind, neat and tidy in appearance, is concentrating on a Braille book open on her knees. Every so often, she coughs to clear her throat.

Joe:     Will you stop it?

Sara:    I'm reading, stop bothering me.

Joe:      Reading, are you? … Einstein, no less… reading and then clearing your throat, just to annoy.

Sara:    I'm not doing it on purpose, you know.  It wouldn't hurt you to read a book once in a while instead of grumbling and moaning all the time.

Joe:     Moralizing again?  I've finally got rid of my mother and now you've started?

Sara:    Your mother has been dead for over twenty years and I'm not moralizing.

Joe:      That's exactly what I was saying, for over twenty years you've been moralizing! Sitting there as if you were reading so I'll think you're smart, and clearing your throat to annoy me.

Sara:    I told you I'm not doing it on purpose.  It bothers me too, you know.

Joe:     For some reason, every time you read you start clearing your throat.

Sara:    What exactly are you trying to say by that?

Joe:     Nothing at all, I was just stating a fact.

Sara:    I can't understand how you manage to drag me into these ridiculous arguments.   Leave me alone, I want to read in peace.

Joe:      Oh, my arguments aren't up to your standard are they?... Read then, read and keep clearing your throat.

 (a few seconds of silence)

Joe:      Alright now are you?  Throat not bothering you anymore, is it?  All clear just to irritate me even more.

(Sara ignores him and, after a while, clears her throat again)

Joe:     And it's back…

Sara:    Will you stop it.  What do you want?

Joe:     I want you to stop bothering me and stop hiding my things.

Sara:    Which things?

Joe:      Which things you ask?  Are you playing dumb?  My electric shaver for example, I haven't seen it in three days.

Sara:    Because, instead of putting it back in its place, you left it on the dresser.

Joe:      On the dresser? (he gets up and walks towards the dresser), what are you talking about! If I’d left it on the dresser, I would have found it… (he works his hands over the objects until he finds the electric shaver; he stops to think) Just as I said, you hid it from me.

Sara:    Don't be ridiculous, I didn't hide it. Three days ago, you went bananas and lashed out at me with another one of your absurd accusations, can't remember which… and left it there.

Joe:      You left it here so that I wouldn't find it and you could tell me this inane story and feel all high and mighty.

Sara:    You're simply becoming a senile grumpy old man.

Joe:      Senile?  You'd like that, wouldn't you?  That's why you hide my things, so I'll think I'm senile, so I'll just sit around the house like your stupid doll.

Sara:    For God's sake, will you stop this nonsense?

Joe:     I'll show you senile, I'll show you how you can become senile too.

As he speaks he starts groping objects on the dresser, he clutches a china doll and hurries out to the corridor.

Sara:    Joseph, What have you done? (She gets up quickly and hurries to the dresser, quickly moving her hands over it)  Where's my doll?  What have you done with it?

Joe:      (only his voice is heard) You won’t find it (appears in the entrance to the corridor with a beaming smile) or your slippers either.  Now who's senile?

Sara:    (losses her calm completely and grabs the radio transistor on the dresser) And you won’t hear another program in the toilet (she place the transistor under the sofa).

Joe:     The radio?  You witch, just you wait …

Joe marches decisively towards the book cabinet takes a number of books and disappears through the corridor.  Sara follows him up to the corridor and then goes straight on, takes the chair by the desk and places it at the entrance to the corridor.

Sara:    Now we'll see how you watch the telly… You blind idiot!

She grabs the little TV on the shelf, and as she walks away toward the desk, the cord comes out of the socket. Meanwhile, Joe comes back to the living room and bumps into the chair Sara moved as she places the TV under the desk.

Joe:      (After almost falling over) You wench , you crazy wench!  You want me to break my head, that's what you want. You want me committed to a hospital so you can have the whole house to yourself.  Just you wait, now I'll take care of all your bloody creams! (He disappears in the corridor again)

Sara is furious, she hurries to the dresser, grabs his electric shaver and sunglasses and shoves them into a draw.  Joe appears only for a second at the entrance to the corridor.

Joe:     Time for the cupboard, wench! Now let's see you find a bra!

Sara:    You're completely insane! You're a blind madman!  How I've managed to put up with you for the last thirty six years, is beyond me.  You'll finish both of us off with a heart attack, that's what you'll do. One day the two of us will be lying on the floor gasping for air, and you'll still be nagging me about my throat.  You mad… lunatic!

While she speaks, she reaches the coat hanger, takes Joe's stick, folds it quickly, and pushes it into one of the table's draws.  She takes a set of keys and throws it across the stage.  She returns to the book shelves and works her hands over it, noticing the books he took.

Sara:    You're a monster, an absolute monster! I borrowed those books from the library. I have to take them back tomorrow.

Meanwhile Joe returns to the living room, breathless he moves his hands over the coat hanger.

Joe:      My stick?!  Just you wait! I won't be the only one cracking his head.

He takes Sara's stick folds it up and rolls it under the dresser. They walk forward and bump into each other.

Joe:     So it's come to this has it?  It's come to blows?

Sara:    My God, do you think I'm as childish as that? (She pushes him anyway and hurries to    the corridor).

Joe:      (waving his hands) What's next? Maybe you'll throw a chair at me, or perhaps stab me to death?  That's what you'd like, to finish me off so you can clear your throat in peace…  This is what we've come to?... Sara?… are you here? Where are you?... Sara?

Sara:    (only her voice is heard) You think you're the only one who can mess with things?  You won’t find anything now!

Joe:     (preparing for battle) Just you wait! I'm on my way.

Joe disappears into the corridor.  There are battle cries and sounds of things smashing on the floor. Joe comes into the living room takes both dressing gowns and disappears in the corridor again. Sara comes out with some folded shirts in her hands and pushes them under the sofa.  She takes the back cushion from Joe's side of the sofa and goes round the table, when suddenly a shattering noise is heard.  She drops the cushion on the floor.

Sara:    (infuriated) The kitchen?

She rushes back stage, more cries of battle. After a while, they return to the stage breathless and messy, and sit down on the sofa. It's obvious that Joe is surprised by the absence of a cushion behind his back but he says nothing only leans back uncomfortably. They are silent.

Sara:    Now you'll never know the time.

Joe:     And you'll never wear a bra.

Sara:    You can't leave the house.

Joe:     Well, you can't either.

They grumble and then are silent again.

Joe:     Alright then, what now?

Sara:    I don't know.  By now, you've probably forgotten where you hid all my things.

Joe:     And I'm sure you can remember…

Sara:    Really Joe, I don’t have the strength for all this foolishness.

Joe:     And you think I have?

Sara:    Right, never mind then…

Silence

Sara:    You really went too far.

Joe:     Me? You're the one who tried to assassinate me with a chair.

Sara:  I didn't do anything of the sort…

Silence

Sara:    Alright, let's stop it. It's become a little tiresome, and there's too much of a mess now. As if it wasn't difficult enough to find things around this house…

 Short silence

Joe:     Shall I put some music on?

Sara:    Alright, go ahead…

Joe looks pleased; he hurries to the CD player presses play and sad classical music begins playing.  They sit there for a few moments listening, when suddenly the doorbell rings.
