CONFISCATION, EXILE, ARREST AND APARTHEID

in South African Novel

The multiplicity of races and cultures, as well as the domination of the white minority that pursues the policy of racial discrimination, makes talk of creativity in South Africa in general and the narrative movement in particular somewhat different from that of the rest of the world. This region is a fertile ground for creative people A strange contradiction and a bitter struggle, as well as the absence of a minimum of freedom that nourishes writing and art .. The white invaders of the British and the Dutch knew their way to South Africa in the latter half of the seventeenth century with the beginning of the trade movement along coastal roads and soon settled in the area ..The Dutch called themselves the Boers to separate them from their British white counterparts. In 1806 the British took over the city of Cape by force from the Boer and took control of 80,000 inhabitants, of which only 26,000 were white.

From the British occupation until the middle of the 19th century, the British and the Boers coexisted in an atmosphere of mutual suspicion because of their different political and cultural ambitions. This was reflected in the indigenous population, where military oppression and economic plunder prevailed. From the British occupation until the middle of the 19th century, coexist in a climate of mutual suspicion in view of their respective political and cultural aspirations, and this is reflected in the indigenous population where more military oppression and economic looting prevailed, With the discovery of mineral wealth in 1870, a major shift in the capitalist corruption was made. Thus, the conflict between the British and the Boers escalated until the war broke out at the beginning of the twentieth century. The political system in the country became more complex. Then the Boyars called themselves Afrikanu. The white minority government succeeded in putting the colored-looking for the chandeliers under the umbrella of enslavement and domination.

After these historical views, which are a necessary input to talk about literature and novels in South Africa, we can say that novelists in that period were writing about plants and animals located in the region by way of scientific sniffing and at best  their work were not beyond those traditional romantic tales free of content and meaning.

As it is in Carrie Hobson's 1897 book (slaves or No slaves), which deals with the story of a slave girl who ends up becoming an heir to one of the Portuguese men.

As well as the novel entitled ( Afternoon Ride ) by the novelist “ Arne Big “ in the same year, tells about the heroine and hero of the proud Victorians and when they love each other , they face many obstacles that can by the power of love to overcome them in the end .

But when we turn to the early beginnings of the twentieth century, specifically in 1900, the Anglo-Boer War or the Afrikaner War had little impact on the development of the novel in South Africa. In his novel "Imperial Light Horseman," Harold Blur describes the mass migration from Johannesburg to Natal, As a result of the war,  in a narrative and realistic way without the novel having any attempt at creationism, just as in the novel "StiveThe Outlander" by Novelist Arthur Liquock, published in 1900.

Then comes the "Olive Schreiner" 1855 - 1920, as well as "Pauline Smith" 1883 - 1959. These novels are in the spirit of creation and creativity until we reach the stage of maturity novelist between the Second World War and the end of the sixties, which continues to mature so far Especially after the establishment of the white minority government, which resulted in the emergence of militant movements for equality and emancipation, the authors turned their attention to the policy of racial discrimination and the rejection of Afrikaans and the demand for the right of blacks in a dignified life, as in the novel "The Beloved Country" Issued in 1948 by the novelist “ Alan Baton “ , as well as His novel ( Too LatePhalarope ) (1953) and thethe most important works of the writer “ Jack Cobb “ like :

- "Golden Bird" in 1958 –

- "The Way to Waterberg" in 1959

- "Rainmaker" in 1971

In addition to many previous and subsequent narratives that we try to be exposed to the most important and most expressive of that unique and noisy atmosphere that ripples South Africa, where the creators did not find the novel but a way to express them saturated manner, it is worth mentioning that most of these novels, With full protest and rejection of various forms of oppression and racism with the great dream of a free and independent homeland.

We start with the novelist “ Bessie Head “ who said before publishing any novel : ( If I have to write one day, I will always say that humans are human without regard to the color of their skin." .. Thus, from the very beginning we learn about her preoccupations and the cause she is worried about amidst an atmosphere of color discrimination.

“ Bessie Head “ was born in 1937 in a mixed city. She moved to Cape Town where she worked as a teacher and journalist and wrote her first novel : ( When Rain Gather Clouds ) , Like all her later works, her personal experience dominates the narrative “MakayaSeko”, who leaves South Africa for Botswana after being involved in anti-government political activity, is clearly aware of the suffering blacks and their reactions to them, as “ Macaya “ tells his old girlfriend when he says: "Do you understand who I am? “Macaya “ is the black dog that flings life , Life is a mixture of agony and pain and may not be Nothing at all I do not even want to understand.) .

Then he tries to explain the meaning of the black dog. "It's just a feeling. Those whites are used to our strange behavior. When we shudder at their whips and panic, they feel very happy because for them we are only black dogs in human form. They laugh at us and when we turn into crazy dogs laughing Top ) .

His good Christian friend could not understand anything he said. One of those who lived their lives in their black leather quietly said, "You are not a black dog and you should not be fooled by their laughs. I do not know those white people, but my faith taught me That life is a big fire in which all people are born until the time to close the shop comes ).

In )Maru ) and ( A Question of Power ), the biography takes on a deeper form. Marguerite” in Maru's novel, "Bessie Head," belongs to the oppressed minority group. When her friend "Dekiledi" is presented with some of her paintings, he asks her, : How did you paint it all? The author says: (Turned "Margaret" and smiled as she could not be able to explain the torment of those days). "Margaret learned how to paint because something inside her was stronger than her body's ability to tolerate , she learned to paint to endure and to restrain her emotions in anticipation of a life that could be tolerated."When “ Maro “ marries “ Margaret “ this is an ethnic victory, but people in the village of“ Maro “ express their rejection of that mixed marriage. They talk about”Maro“ as if he had died. The sick bitch”Dilip“ explains their position and says, "It's just a whim.

While the people of "Margaret" and her tribe see that the door was quietly opened to a small dark room free of air they lived in a long time and that the winds of freedom flowed inside the room and then the author goes on to say: ( their humanity woked up ) .

“Bessie Head “ who rejects what happens in South Africa and dreams of change by sharing love between human races, views marriage as a way of living among people in peace away from the color of their skin .

In the novel ( Question of Power ) “ Elizabeth “ is not very different from “ Bessie Head “ herself. , She is also teaching and practices politics , “ Elizabeth “ left South Africa in the novel as” Bessie Head “ actually did as well as she suffer from severe alienation and a sense of loss of roots ..the Author expresses this at the beginning of the novel of Silo saying : ( I am just anyone) .

(Question of Power ) is one of the heyday of “ Bessie Head,s “ work. In spite of the similarity we have referred to, it is freed from the burden of autobiography and factual narration of its life , she used The symbol and transmitted to other characters representing the various other issues.

Prior to her exposure to the writer“ Nadine Gordimer “ she is not the only Afrikaans writer who has dealt with various forms of oppression and racism in her work, but there are different stories, narratives, poetic and drama works by other white innovators who have taken the same ideas and stood by the blacks and sympathized with their cause and was characterized by a rejection of the policy of racial discrimination .

Although Nadine Gordimer - after winning the Nobel Prize in 1991 - has become the most prominent of these writers in the literary scene, but the reader neutral find it difficult to realize what is intended to him and does not feel after reading the sympathy and pleasure, as it happens after the completion of reading One of the black creators, for two reasons: first, that the black creator can never ignore the fact that he is one of the original owners of the country, in addition to what he has always suffered from oppression, slavery, exile, arrest and confiscation of his image reflects the reality of a simple style commensurate with the forms of literary writing Which carry national issues and concerns .

The second reason is Nadine Gordimer's style of writing, which is very complex and the reader is unable to follow and thus lose the desired sympathy.

I think that Nadine Gordimer's style and difficult language combinations are the reason for the reluctance of the translators to deal with the translation of their many works, contrary to the work of all those who received the same award.

The first reason reminds us of the need to refer to two of South Africa's most prominent black innovators,” Alex La Guma” and “ Ezekiel Mefalili.”

“Alex La Guma “ was born in Cape Town in 1925 and remained under guard since 1962 until he left the country with his family in 1966. He was banned from entering because of his political activities. His fiction and stories are deeply immersed in the people and their suffering is dominated by the idea of land, And the total rejection of the policy of racial discrimination. The strength of his writings lies in the simple and realistic construction of acts and personalities.

In a novel ( A Walk in the Night ) 1967, he describes the blues and desolation of a place steeped in love and exposed to the methods of struggle across the edge of a high mountain so that he said : "We claw in the rocks for a foothold and breathe hard with that breeze coming from the northeast.

He describes the suffering of people by saying: (they feel the breeze in their homes suffocating through cracked cracks and windows)

We see “ Joe “ who loves the sea and takes a simple philosophy of life when He goes to the sea at the end of the novel, where he can circumvent life , He says : ( Walking alone in the dark ) .

Then he add : (In the morning he becomes saturated with the smell of the ocean and bends close to the green surface to see the palm fronds and seagrass, and through the rocks he examines the mystery of life in the various wonderful sea creatures and listens to the harsh wave as it collides with those rocks)

The most striking of these accounts is Melodrama, Crime, Violence, Kidnapping, Child Death in Fire, Arrests, and Political Publications, and all the characters of " La Guma" against the regime , The distinction between black and white is prominent in his creations , Discrimination is also within the prison , so treatment is not the same treatment, and food is not the same food .

“ LaGuma “ does not miss the reason why blacks are arrested and put in prison if they are not politicians , He says : ( They enter prison as a result of severe despair of their black color, which makes them commit crimes ) .

In the novel "In The Fog Of The Season End" written by Exile, the fog reigns at the end of the novel, and the rebellion ends with the death of “ Elias” , so that the reader imagines that” La Guma ” represents a pessimistic vision because of its defeated end, "Elias" freedom in the continuation of others and this continuity is what occupies more than the suffering of "Elias" .

The dialogue at “ Alex La Guma “ is brief and inspirational, and we always find his heroes engaged in political activities know what they are doing and what they think, as in the novel ( The Stone Country ) , George Adams does not feel sorry for his arrest because of a political charge , the Author says : (He did the right thing from his point of view and knew the results) .

Before returning to “ Nadine Gordimer “ , when we mention creativity and talk about the novel in South Africa, we must refer to the African literature dean as he is called there, who, like” Alex La Guma “ suffered from the harshness of exile when he expressed this : ( I am in great need to be in touch with my environment , writing outside the country is meaningless, especially as the ability to retrieve events becomes somewhat difficult .

He is” Mphahlele “ , born in 1919 in Pretoria and left South Africa with his family for Nigeria .

“Mphahlele “'s style is very simple in dealing with the same hot issues, and he has written a lot of storytelling and fiction, but most of it has been confiscated, and perhapthe novel ( Down ٍ Second Avenue ) which is the first of his writing in 1959 and one of the most important of his work inspite it is about the Self-sufficiency in South Africa .

“ Mphahlele “ wrote the novel ( The Wanderes ) (1971) and three years later followed by ( Chirundu ) but it did not spread until five years after it was written , It was his early novel ( Man Must Live ) the only two novels published in South Africa, The rest of his work, which was published all outside the country, and this happened after the decline of the White Government for the decision to prevent his work where the publishing houses quickly added the creations of the Dean of Literature to the list of writers.

In the field of criticism of African literature, "Mphalele" wrote a wonderful volume entitled (The African Image) .

“Nadine Gordimer “ was born on November 20, 1923 in Spornings, South Africa, of a Dutch father. She wrote several novels, most notably : ( The Late Bourgeois World ) 1966 and ( July People ) 1981 and many other novels since 1953 , as well as seven story collections since 1949: 1987 .

Her work was translated into several languages and the racist government in South Africa - before winning the Nobel Prize - blocked its circulation because of its bold views and resistance to the policy of racial discrimination. If we are in front of a prolific writer whose production is dominated by a subject that has been raised for her. She stands firmly against the politics of Apartheid, Politics, Equality, Freedom and the Condemnation of white society, as in ( The Late Bourgeois World ) which I translated into Arabic in 2002 in Cairo where “ Graham “ says: ( They call us the Late bourgeois world ) . It is worth noting that the White Government has confiscated this novel on the grounds that the main characters of the white and black are immersed in sexual relations, but the real reason is the condemnation of the white society, that harsh society, which lacks the feeling and the ability to communicate not only between white and black, but also between white and white.

“Nadine Jordemer “wants to simply say in The (Late Bourgeois World) that whites in South Africa are just human qualities, so they are afraid to live like other people and are afraid to deal honestly with their feelings because they implicitly agree to live under inhumane laws.

Confiscation, Exile, Arrest and Apartheid are the main features of South African literature, Even writing by its creators is an urgent necessity in the face of that anti-creative political climate .. “ Nadine Gordimer “ is one of those writers who saw writing as necessary.

“ Wole Soyinka “ a prominent Nigerian writer ( Noble Laureate ) said: ( If there is only one literary form and one linguistic communication method, we will be destroyed by weariness and boring. !! )

Perhaps this statement explains that necessity and the creative uniqueness that characterizes the African continent in general and South Africa in particular.

( Too Late Phalarope* )
The Road To Yesterberg  ) 1959  .
The Rainmaker  ) 1971  .
The Student Of Zend  ) 1972  .

The Three Fold Cord    1964   .
The stone Country    1967   .
In The Fog Of The Season`s End    .
Time Of The Butcherbird*    .

The African Image ) .
